2025 Ghana: Back to My Roots
Thursday, June 26 to Saturday, July 5, 2025
Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute is committed to supporting literacy and youth leadership development initiatives in Ghana.
The Time is now to return home
Returning to Africa is a Sankofa moment. Sankofa reflects the philosophy of “go back and fetch it.” It also means “we must return to the source.” With each visit, Dr. Tyner recaptures her cultural heritage and pride. She sees a reflection of her ancestors who paved the way for her very existence through their hard work, fierce determination, and unwavering faith.
Dr. Tyner returns to the source of her history and finds renewed strength. She shares this gift with others. She travels to Africa with community members, educators, and business leaders. Her hope is that they too will experience Sankofa by discovering our shared humanity and common destiny.
We hope you will join us on this transformative journey

2019 Year of Return
2019 marked the 400-year anniversary of the first enslaved Africans’ arrival in the United States in 1619. This is a time to pause, reflect, and act. Momentum is building nationally and globally. In 2013, the UN declared 2015–2024 the International Decade for People of African Descent to “promote respect, protection and fulfillment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms of people of African descent.” Furthermore, H.R.1242—400 Years of African-American History Commission Act—was passed on May 1, 2017, and established the Commission to develop and carry out activities throughout the United States to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619.
