Writing for Social Change Collection

We’ll help you become a published children’s book author and plant a seed of social change.

This workshop series below will provide BIPOC artists just like you with the tools to imagine and create culturally diverse children's books.

You will learn about the craft and design from experienced literary artists.

You will then be inspired to write a manuscript for a writing competition.

Winners will receive:

  • $3,000

  • a copy of the published book

Children’s Book Award Criteria

  • MN resident of African descent

  • Age 18 and up

  • Topics

    • Fiction: Picture book on Juneteenth, Rondo, or Black Joy (500 - 1,000 words, 32 pages)

    • Nonfiction: Short biography highlighting a Minnesota hero or shero: Dr. Josie Johnson, Roy Wilkins, August Wilson (1,000 -1,200 words, 32 pages)

Nancy Loewen is an author of over 140 books for children and young adults, editor, college application essay coach, and ACT and SAT tutor. She collaborates with Linda Hayen to bring Linda’s daughter Clarissa's voice forward after losing her to a car accident.
